About the Role
About MVESS
The Mountain View Emergency Shelter Society (MVESS) supports individuals impacted by gender-based violence and works collaboratively with community partners to improve safety, stability, and access to essential services.
Through the Mountain View Collaborative Hub, MVESS is implementing the Justice Access Program, an initiative designed to improve access to justice for survivors of gender-based violence throughout Mountain View County and surrounding rural communities.
The program brings together justice, health, social service, education, housing, and community partners to provide coordinated, accessible, and survivor-centred support.
About the Position
MVESS is seeking a compassionate, organized, and collaborative Justice Access Program Navigator to support survivors navigating complex justice systems and community services.
The successful candidate will help survivors understand their options, access legal information and referrals, develop safety plans, navigate police reporting and court processes, and connect with appropriate protective, health, housing, financial, and community resources.
Working through the Mountain View Collaborative Hub, the successful candidate will also strengthen partnerships, facilitate warm referrals, support coordinated case management, and contribute to community education and awareness initiatives.
This position offers an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of survivors while helping build a stronger, more coordinated response to gender-based violence in rural Alberta.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide trauma-informed, survivor-centred justice navigation and advocacy.
- Assist survivors in understanding legal rights, available protections, and justice-system processes.
- Support safety planning, risk screening, and access to Emergency Protection Order processes.
- Facilitate referrals to legal services, victim services, law enforcement, health care, housing, financial assistance, and other community resources.
- Assist with police reporting processes, court preparation, and court accompaniment, as appropriate.
- Provide coordinated case management, warm referrals, and follow-up support.
- Collaborate with RCMP detachments, victim services, health providers, legal professionals, social service agencies, and community organizations.
- Participate in the Mountain View Collaborative Hub’s Community of Practice and help strengthen coordinated referral pathways.
- Support community education, outreach, and awareness activities related to gender-based violence and access to justice.
- Maintain accurate, confidential client records and contribute to program monitoring, evaluation, and grant reporting.
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate will have:
- A diploma or degree in social work, human services, criminology, justice studies, victim services, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Experience supporting individuals impacted by gender-based violence, trauma, family violence, or other complex circumstances.
- Experience in advocacy, case management, crisis intervention, victim services, community outreach, or service coordination.
- Knowledge of justice-system processes and community-based support services, or a willingness to develop this knowledge.
- Strong communication, organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- The ability to build respectful relationships with survivors and multidisciplinary community partners.
- A demonstrated commitment to trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and survivor-centred practice.
- The ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and establish professional boundaries.
- A valid driver's licence and reliable transportation, if required for outreach and court accompaniment.
Knowledge of rural service delivery, Indigenous-serving organizations, and the challenges survivors face when accessing justice is considered an asset.
