Position Summary
The Financial Controller leads the financial operations for West-Can Seal Coating Inc. for both its Construction (West-Can Seal Coating) and Manufacturing Division (Western Asphalt Products). Working alongside Senior Management, this role delivers robust historical financial analysis and strategic forward-looking insights to drive business performance. The Controller is very hands-on and oversees full-cycle accounting, financial reporting, job costing, inventory costing, cash flow forecasting, audits and compliance. Key priorities include maintaining strong internal controls, managing liquidity and capital assets and mentoring the finance team to foster operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Analysis:
Prepare job cost reports, inventory reports and operational financial statements to support Senior Management decision-making.
Provide financial insights to support continuous margin evaluation and project profitability analysis across business units.
Controls & Governance:
Develop, implement and maintain internal controls, accounting policies and governance frameworks.
Ensure accurate monthly financial statement preparation and efficient full-cycle month-end closing procedures.
Maintain strict compliance with operating line covenants and manage multi-entity financial oversight across all business divisions.
Asset & Cash Management:
Oversee capital asset accounting, fixed asset depreciation and internal equipment rate evaluations.
Direct full-cycle payables, accounts receivable, credit risk assessments, invoicing and contract holdbacks.
Support treasury operations, monitor debt/financing structures and cultivate banking relationships.
Review, verify and approve electronic fund transfers, wire payments, and cheque runs in accordance with internal financial controls and authorization limits.
Audits & Operations:
Support and train operational personnel on financial systems, ERP software and field reporting to verify accurate job resource tracking and project cost accruals.
Serve as the primary contact for external accounting firms during annual audit and tax compliance engagements.
Oversee federal and multi-provincial sales tax and compliance reporting requirements, audits and issue resolution.
Team Leadership & Administration:
Direct, mentor and support the professional growth of accounting and administrative staff, including Payroll and Accounts Payable, across all entities.
Oversee IT systems, software, enterprise ERP applications and technical infrastructure to support operational efficiency and business continuity.
Liaise with internal stakeholders, clients, vendors and financial advisors while driving process improvements and cross-functional strategic initiatives.
What we’re looking for…
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration.
CPA designation required.
Professional Experience:
8+ years of progressive financial management experience, preferably within the construction industry (experience in manufacturing will also be considered).
5+ years in a supervisory role managing accounting personnel.
Proven expertise in multi-entity accounting and full cycle construction accounting.
Technical & Core Competencies:
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (financial modelling, lookups, pivot tables) and Google Workspace.
Hands-on experience with enterprise ERP systems.
Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex financial data into actionable strategic guidance.
Analytical mindset focused on continuous process improvement.
Aptitude for overseeing business IT systems, software applications and technical infrastructure.
Additional Information
Work Conditions:
Full-time, in-office position based in Didsbury, Alberta.
Standard hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (40 hours per week).
Overtime may be required during peak season.
