About the Role
Food Water Wellness Foundation is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Soil Laboratory Technician to support soil sample processing and analysis. This role offers hands-on experience in soil science, laboratory operations, and data management within a dynamic research environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Process and analyze soil core samples, including measuring soil properties (depth, horizons, temperature, texture)
- Prepare samples for laboratory testing (bulk density, genomics, aggregate stability, and texture analysis)
- Operate and maintain lab equipment (ovens, grinders, sieves, proofers)
- Record and manage data accurately using spreadsheets and digital systems
- Label, track, and organize samples through all stages of processing
- Follow directions of the Laboratory Supervisor to ensure a cohesive team environment
- Follow all Standard Operating Procedures and Policies
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized laboratory environment
- Support inventory management and coordination with field teams
Physical Requirements
This role involves moderate physical activity. Candidates should be able to:
- Lift and carry soil sample containers and equipment weighing up to 44 lb (20 kg)
- Stand for extended periods during sample processing
- Perform repetitive tasks such as sieving, grinding, and weighing samples
- Work in a laboratory environment that may involve exposure to soil dust and odours
- Occasionally assist with field sample collection, which may require walking on uneven terrain
Qualifications
The successful candidate:
- Must have strong attention to detail and ability to follow standardized protocols
- Must be comfortable working in a laboratory environment and handling soil samples
- Must have strong organizational and time-management skills
- Possess basic computer and data entry skills (Excel or similar tools)
- Must be able to work independently and as part of a team
- Having an interest in agriculture, environmental science, or soil health is an asset
- Have a valid driver’s licence and a reliable vehicle as the lab is five minutes from town (alternately, there is a cab company in town)
Eligibility Requirements (Canada Summer Jobs Program)
To be eligible for this position, applicants must:
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or have refugee protection status
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) and be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Be available to work full-time (30-40 hours/week) for the duration of the position
Note: International students are not eligible under this program.
